Epicenter
Bjørn Hegardt & Theo Ågren
6. – 30. January 2022
Bærum kunsthall

Bjørn Hegardt and Theo Ågren are known for creating captivating site-specific installations that explore natural phenomena such as black holes, white light, and whirlwinds. Their work is often laced with humor, blending scientific, popular, and pseudo-scientific theories. The duo combines everyday objects to create three-dimensional tableaus that employ optical illusions as a consistent tool.

In their installation Epicenter, Hegardt and Ågren challenge gravity and manipulate perspective through the use of readymades that take on new meaning in unexpected compositions. The installation captures a frozen moment of an explosion, where furniture and objects seem to have a life of their own. The installation’s title refers to a place where significant change is most likely to occur, such as the center of a violent or important event. Although often associated with natural disasters or pandemics, the term carries an ambiguous meaning that can be interpreted as both positive and negative.
